A dental implant fits in the jaw bone like a tooth root would. The implant is made out of titanium metal.

The implant post connects perfectly to the top of the dental implant. A dental porcelain crown is made to fit snugly onto the implant post. Most patients prefer natural looking porcelain fused to gold crowns so that the artificial dental crown can cosmetically blend into the mouth.

Over time, the gums around the dental implant adhere as if to the natural tooth. The jaw bone around the dental implant holds it firmly in the mouth. The pressure from chewing on the implant crown is transmitted to the underlying bone and helps keep this bone healthy and viable.

There is some time involved for the healing process after the implants are surgically embedded in the jaw bone but once this procedure is completed, these implants can last a life time, look normal and can keep the facial structure from collapsing, as sometimes happens with dentures.
